Eckmeter, formerly of Ionia, has been received by friends in Ionia. His death took place at the Marine hospital in Detroit on December 20, and he was buried at Woodmere cemetery, December 23. Mr. Eckmeter enlisted in August 1899, in the U.S. army, Company E. and served in the Philippine Islands. Shortly after he was mustered out of service at San Francisco, he re-enlisted and served for 15 years before his retirement, becoming a sergeant in the U.S. cavalry. He was a brother of the late Clinton Eckmeter of Ionia, and was employed as a cigar maker in the Barrett and Scully cigar factory at the time he left Ionia for Detroit, where he later enlisted.
