Many victims of P. M. wreck known here, 32 killed and 100 wounded. Harrowing Scenes, Beggar Descriptions. Many a Body Dismembered. Carelessness and indifference the cause. Freight Crew to blame. Five Funerals Held in one Church on the Same day. Only those into whose homes sorrow and suffering came as the result of such an accident as Saturday’s can realize the sadness of so great a shock. Mrs. Abraham Eddy The funeral of Mrs. Abraham Eddy of Ionia, one of the victims of the Salem wreck, was conducted from the home of her sister Mrs. Ira Anway Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Mourer officiating. The burial was made in Lakeside cemetery. Mrs. Eddy was born in New York state and was 50 years old at the time of her death. Her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Anna Horrocks, and a son, Jay Eddy, are left to mourn her loss. Mr. Eddy is now in the Flint hospital in a serious condition as a result of the injuries he received. Jay, one of the four survivors of the smoking car, gave a representative to the Wave the following story of the wreck. “I was in the smoking car when the collision came and mother and father were in the second car back. As soon as I could get out of the water which was coming from the tender of our engine I began to look for my parents. I found mother in a heap of iron and wood, her clothing torn and her body mangled and her left arm severed. As soon as I could, I carried her to the bank beside the track and held my umbrella over her. She died in my arms in less than five minutes. The cries of the injured and sight of those lying in the ruins, I shall never forget.” Mr. Eddy was somewhat scratched up about the face and bruised about the body and he can’t understand how he escaped death when so many were killed in the same car he was in.
