On Saturday morning, January 15th, after a brief and seemingly slight illness, Mrs. Elizabeth Carbaugh Eddy passed quietly away. Mrs. Eddy was born in Buffalo, New York May 3d, 1840. Her parents were Fellows Gates and Mary Gates, and with them and her seven brothers and sisters, she moved to the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario, when she was aged about three, and with them returned to the United States in 1853, settling in Michigan, in Orange township, Ionia County. Here she married Wm. Carbaugh in 1857, and lived in the same township until his death, which occurred May 26, 1894, and where they raised a family of eight children. After Mr. Carbaugh’s death Mrs. Carbaugh moved to the village of Portland where she remained until the summer of 1899, when she married Mr. Zephaniah Eddy of Berlin township and moved there, where Mr. Eddy died two years later. Mrs. Eddy returned to Portland, where she has resided since, with the exception of more or less extensive visits to her different children. Mrs. Eddy was of an active, vigorous nature, and to her last days retained her exceptional activity of mind; she was of a cheerful and sociable disposition and had (what was remarkable in a person of her age) a peculiarly strong attraction for the young people by whom she was constantly surrounded up to the time of her death. Her last sickness was of short duration and her death was mercifully easy. Mrs. Eddy was a member of the Free will Baptist church, but her infirmities had made it impossible for her to attend church for a number of years. At her death she was aged 75 years, 8 months and 12 days. The funeral was held at her residence on James street 10:30 Tuesday morning. It is not often that all the grown children of a family are all present at the funeral of a parent but in this case they all reside in Michigan, and most of them in this county. Of her eight children one son died in 1889. The remaining seven are George F. Carbaugh, Mrs. Mary Ferguson, Mrs. Emma Whitmore and Grant Carbaugh, all of Ionia county; Mrs. Caroline Allerton of Mt. Pleasant, W. J. Carbaugh, of Lansing and Mrs. Charles Kent, of Bay City. These (with their children and grandchildren) all gathered Tuesday morning in their mother’s home for the last time to pay their last dutiful, but unwilling tribute to the Grim Reaper.
