Irene was born on May 22, 1910, in Easton Township, Ionia County, the daughter of Thomas H. and Grace K. DeGraw Edlin. As a child Irene attended Dildine Country School in Easton Township, graduated from Ionia High School, attended Ionia County Normal and later received a bachelor’s degree at Western Michigan University. Irene enjoyed a teaching career of 43 years which started at the country schools in Ionia and Gratiot counties and finished with 27 years with Belding Area Schools. While in Belding she taught first grade at Washington School and later went to Hallpark School teaching second grade, retiring in 1975. Irene was a kind and caring sister and aunt who enjoyed her family and the many family get-togethers. She enjoyed watching the birds, walking and riding her stationary bicycle. She was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, past member of many other teacher organizations including the Sigma Chapter, of the Delta Kappa Gamma and the Belding Women’s Business and Professional Club. Irene was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Charles and Dale Edlin; sisters Pauline Larsen, Ethlyn Kimble and Marjorie White; nephew Richard White; great nephew John Edlin; and a great, great nephew Kevin Stout. Irene is loved and survived by her nephews and nieces Douglas and Janice White, whom she lived with, James and Tami Edlin of Belding, Gary and Sue Edlin of Lansing, Mary Jane and Pastor Frank Everett of Missouri, Michael and Mary Larsen of Pennsylvania, Diane and James Chickering of Wisconsin, Thomas and Mary Kimble of Michigan, Dennis and Jill Kimble of Saranac, Charlene and Mark Shaltz of East Jordan, Susan and Terry Tast of Charlotte, Steven and Kim Kimble of Saranac, Norma and Tom White of Ionia. Irene is also survived by 23 great nieces and nephews, many great-great nieces and nephews, and one great, great, great niece and nephew. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Interment will follow in Easton Township Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Alvah N. Belding Library.
