T. Johnson, of the Saranac Advertiser, who came up Monday on afternoon freight, reports the suicide of Charles Edson, a middle aged man, who has been in the barber business there for many years. The trouble with Edson was strong drink. Mr. Johnson says that he met Edson about 12:30, and that he was then so far under the influence that he bubbled over with foolish talk. About an hour later, someone came over for a doctor, saying Edson had shot himself. Johnson went over with the doctor. Edson was dead, the bullet having entered the head just behind the temple and passed entirely through. The family were too hysterical to give any clear account of the circumstances attending the tragedy. Edson had threatened to shoot himself once before, about three months ago, at a time when he was “pretty full,” but was prevented by someone taking the pistol away from him. Beyond the drink habit, there does not seem to have been any reason for the act. He was doing a living business and nothing appears to show that his situation in life was not at least ordinarily comfortable and pleasant. He leaves a wife and eight or nine children, the oldest being about 21 years.
