Edwards, 63, of 669 New North Dexter, and lifelong resident of Iona, died at 5:30 Friday morning at Ionia County Memorial hospital where he was taken at 2:10. He had been ill the past 18 months but was on his job at the county courthouse Thursday where he had been custodian for the past four years. Born February 24, 1901 in Ionia he was the son of Lester and Lillie Kelley Edwards and attended Ionia public schools. December 22, 1921 he was married to Charabell Brockway of Ionia. For several years following his marriage he operated a gasoline service station on West Main street where the new Bell telephone building is located. He also operated a grocery store 13 years on West Lincoln avenue followed by 11 years employment at Ionia State Hospital at a therapist. For seven years he was custodian at the old Ionia city hospital on Jackson street and had the same position three years at the new hospital. Previous to his most recent employment at the courthouse he operated a restaurant at Lake Odessa and was custodian at Ionia Elks temple. He was also an upholsterer and had worked at Ionia car shop. Recently he had been a weather observer for the federal government. He was a member of the Ionia Baptist church. Surviving besides his wife, Charabell, are four sons, Claude of Lyons, Stanley and Gerald of Ionia, and Kenneth, Damage Control 1-C, United States Navy; a son Stuart died in 1935; one daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Beckett of Portland; 21 grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Mable Shoemaker of West Branch, Mrs. Theo Bell Shire of Lansing, Mrs. Sada Schuman of Dearborn, Mrs. Alyde Fox of Grand Rapids; four brothers preceded him in death. Funeral service will be Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Myers funeral home. Rev. John Tennyson of the Baptist church will officiate and interment will be in the family lot at Highland Park cemetery.
