He had left Friday, December 7, by bus for Napoleon, Ohio to attend the funeral of a brother-in-law but was stricken with a heart attack and was removed to St. Lawrence hospital, Lansing. Later that night he was removed to the Ionia hospital where he remained in critical condition until his death. Edwards was born February 4, 1876 in Henry county, Ohio. He moved to Michigan in 1893 and was first employed as sexton at Highland Park cemetery. He also worked at the Dean and Eyster grocery and the Phelps grocery before going to work for Standard Oil company. A banquet was given in his honor by Standard Oil company at the Reed Inn in Ionia at the completion of 30 years service. He has been retired from there since December 1, 1933. Since his retirement he has traveled through Michigan selling door checks and has been the company’s top salesman for several years. He had also been employed at the Ionia State hospital and at the Boys Vocation school, Lansing. He married Lillian Mae Kelly of Grand Ledge October 15, 1891. She preceded him in death in 1941. Two sons died in their youth and a son, Clem D. Edwards, died in 1946. Surviving are two sons, Frank and Leo of Ionia; four daughters, Mrs. John Shoemaker of West Branch, Mrs. John Shire of Lansing and Mrs. Sada Schuman and Mrs. Walter Fox of Detroit; 23 grandchildren; 31 great- grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Benjamin Scheuerman, of Toledo, Ohio. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Myers funeral home. Interment will be in Highland Park cemetery. Bearers will be six grandsons, Jack Shoemaker of West Branch, Claude Edwards of Lyons, Stanley Edwards of Grandville, Bob Kreig of Garden City and Richard Fox and Jack Shire Jr. of Lansing. Honorary bearers will be former Standard Oil associates. Subsequent Publication – Wednesday, December 19, 1951 Services for Lester Alva Edwards, 75, who died at the Ionia County Memorial hospital Saturday evening, December 15, after a few days illness were conducted by the Rev. W. W. Pixley of the First Baptist church at Myers funeral home Tuesday at 2 p.m. Bearers, all grandsons, were Jack Shoemaker of West Branch, Claude Edwards of Lyons, Stanley Edwards of Grandville, Bob Kreig of Garden City, and Richard Fox and Jack Shire, Jr., of Lansing. Honorary bearers were all former Standard Oil associates from the Grand Rapids office. Interment was in Highland Park cemetery where he had been former sexton. Attending from away were Mrs. Benjamin Scheuern of Toledo, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. John Shoemaker and Jack of West Branch; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Edwards of Lyons; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Edwards of Grandville; Mrs. Jack Robbins of Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. John Shire, Jack and Donnabelle, Miss Kay Crammer, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Niblock and Vicki, Mrs. Gerry Mitchell and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fox of Lansing; Mrs. Sada Schuman, Bert Keene, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fox, Robert, Rosalie and Ramona, and Albert Fox of Detroit and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kreig of Garden City.
