George Eitelbus of Ronald Meets Sudden Death in this City One of those every-day tragedies that brings a sudden consciousness of the brittle thread by which life is held was enacted here Saturday, in which a man was thrown out of this world before he fairly realized that his life was in danger. George Eitelbus drove to town Saturday a.m. with a lead of hogs, which he had sold to Welch & Longe. He unhitched his horses from the wagon, while he unloaded the hogs at the stock yard on So. Dexter street. When this work was finished, the horses were again attached to the wagon, and he took his seat prepared to drive into town. The gravel train had just pulled across the road, to clear it for teams. Mr. E.’s horses were full of life and not accustomed to cars, and in starting to cross the track they shied to one side, and one wheel struck a telegraph pole; this caused them to take a faster pace, and they went over the track with one side of wagon off from the planking between the rails. This caused the wagon to bound, still further frightening the team. The double box made the seat less secure than usual, and Mr. Eitelbus was thrown off the wagon, striking the sidewalk projection at the corner of Front street near Schild’s shop with great violence. He was picked up and carried into the Union hotel, bleeding profusely and being unconscious. His injuries seemed to be about the head, one side of his face being badly torn, and his mouth full of blood. Dr. Tremayne was summoned, but the pulse of the injured man was then very faint, and he died a few moments later. No examination was made at the time to ascertain the exact location and character of the injuries. Mr. Eitelbus is a prominent farmer, who moved last fall from Bushnell to a farm which he purchased of Mr. Hicks two and half miles south-west of Palo. He was about 60 years of age, and leaves two sons grown to maturity and a daughter. The Coroner’s Inquest. The coroner’s jury, summoned to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the death of George Eitelbus, met at the office of Justice Curry at 10 o’clock a.m. Monday. Coroner Williams was in charge; Prosecuting Attorney Davis was present for the people, and Frank C. Miller appeared for the railroad company.
