John Elliott died Suddenly about 5:15 last evening, from injury inflicted by his cow. Just how the injury was received is not known, as there were no witnesses. The cow had been staked out in front of his home on West Lincoln Avenue. He went out about 4:30 to take her up. A few moments later Jas. H. Laden, from the porch of his house adjoining, noticed Mr. Elliot lying at full length on the ground, and hastened to his assistance, but before he reached the place, Elliott arose, remarked that the cow had knocked him over, but proceeded at once to lead her to the barn. After securing her, he walked to the house, sat down on the porch a few moments, and the went in and laid down on the bed. A little later the neighbors responded to cries of help from the house, and found Mr. Elliott in evident bad condition. He remarked that he was going to die, and in a few minutes more passed away before the arrival of a doctor. Much difficulty was experienced in finding a doctor, but finally Dr. More reached the house and made an examination. There were no marks on the body, but it was found that the rib over the heart was fractured and there is no doubt that the cow struck him either with hoof or head. Mr. Elliott was 69 years old. He had been a resident of Ionia about 45 year, his occupation being most of the time that of a teamster, and his reputation for honesty and faithfulness being excellent. For the past four or five years he has not been able to do much hard work. His wife, whose maiden name was Harriet Hubbs, died seven or eight years ago. There were four children: Frank, who has not been here since the death of his mother, and shoes last known address was Detroit; Charles B. and Fred, both of this city; and Carrie, wife of John Etiman. Mapleton, No, Dak. Fred has been a helpless invalid, under care of his father, for the past year and a half. Telegram was sent to Mrs. Etiman and a letter of inquiry to Detroit. Time of funeral will be announced later. Daily Standard - Friday, August 26, 1910 There was a good attendance at the funeral service for John Elliott, Thursday afternoon, at the late home on W. Lincoln Avenue, where he had lived so many years. The service was by Rev. D. C. Ostroth, pastor of the Evangelical church, and the singing by Mrs. Ostroth and Mrs. Niergarth.
