All knew it must come yet what sadness it brings. She was one of the earliest among the pioneers of these parts and was known to nearly everyone. Her friends have rejoiced because her life has been prolonged far beyond the usual allotment of men and women. This last illness however proved too much for her weakened constitution and it could be seen that the end was steadily approaching, and Tuesday she quietly passed away. Her maiden name was Louisa P. Wilson, she was born in East Shelburn, Mass., Nov. 3d, 1812 and would therefore have been 88 years of age her next birthday. She was married October 22, 1834, to Mr. Lewis Ellis of Ashfield, Mass., where they lived until the spring of 1842 when they removed to Otisco. Mr. Ellis died four years ago. In those early times it took over three weeks to make the journey which can now be made in less than twenty-four hours. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis settled on the farm on the north side of the river in what is now an important part of the City of Belding, and where they have always lived. There they built their home and developed their large and valuable farm. They were the first settlers, and all this country was then a complete wilderness and inhabited only by Indians and wild animals. About the time of their location here there was a large emigration from Ashfield, Mass., to this section and among them all, who were heads of families, Mrs. Ellis was the last survivor. When about sixteen years of age she joined the Baptist church and ever remained an ardent and valuable member of that church. Mrs. Ellis was widely known, respected and loved. She was aunt or great aunt to most of the Beldings, Wilsons, Luicks and Ellises in this part of the country. She leaves two children and four grandchildren – the latter, children of her daughter Mary, wife of Mr. Fred E. Ranney, who reside on the homestead and who have cared for their aged mother many years. Her son, Mr. George W. Ellis and wife of Philadelphia were with her the last few weeks and rendered the most assiduous attention. The funeral services are to be held this (Thursday) afternoon at the family home conducted by the Reverends Quick and McConnell of the Baptist church assisted by Rev. Staley the Congregational pastor. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/e/ellis2595nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.9 Kb
