Agent Dies Friday A.M. Bernard Ely, 60, for 36 years Ionia Grand Trunk railroad station agent and for 38 years an employee of the railroad, died at his home at 229 Lafayette Street, at 7:30 o’clock Friday morning. Mr. Ely had been seriously ill for two weeks following a heart attack and had been retired because of ill health for the past two years. A native of Muir, Mr. Ely was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Ely of Muir and was born August 20, 1880, at Muir. He was graduated from Muir high school in 1898. In 1901 Mr. Ely was employed by the Grand Trunk railroad at Muir as a station employee. After one year he moved to Ionia where he continued his railroad education in the Ionia Grand Trunk depot. In 1903 he was appointed Ionia station agent and he continued as such until his failing health forced his partial retirement nearly three years ago. In 1903 Mr. Ely was married to Miss Bessie M. Smith of Muir. He was a member of the Ionia Presbyterian church and the Ionia Masonic Lodge. Surviving besides Mrs. Ely are two brothers, Sherman J. Ely of Lansing and Roscoe Ely of Ludington. Funeral services are to be held from the Myers funeral home in Ionia Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. Adam J. Westmaas will officiate and interment will be at the North Plains cemetery north of Muir.
