After weeks of suffering Asa Engelman died at his home 111 ½ North Depot street, Tuesday afternoon, his death taking from trainmen’s circles one of the pioneers of railroad service here. He was born in Marshall in 1856, and came to Ionia in 1876 to enter the railroad shops then belonging to the Detroit, Lansing & Northern Railway company. After working for several months in the shops he was given a fireman’s run, and was soon promoted to engineer service. He continued in the capacity as engineer for the railroad, now the Pere Marquette, until his retirement in 1925, when he was given an extended leave of absence. Several years he was the engineer on the fast train running between Grand Rapids and Detroit. Several weeks ago he was operated on in Grand Rapids, but his surgery brought but little improvement, and for several weeks he has been slowly failing. The widow, to whom he was married in Ionia in 1880, survives. He had lived in Ionia, Stanton, and Detroit, making runs out of these places, returning to Ionia after his retirement in 1925, having resided here since. He also leaves four brothers, Abraham Engelman, of Ionia; Henry Engelman, of Chicago, and Mark and Joseph Engelman, of Grand Rapids. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen. Funeral services will be conducted from the Bradley funeral home Friday afternoon at 2:30 by Rev. Fr. Edwin G. White. Interment will be in the Highland Park cemetery.
