Mrs. Esch was born March 5, 1913, to Clarence and Jenny Hale in Portland, where she spent most of her life. After graduating from Michigan State University in June 1936, she worked 10 years with the Michigan Geological Survey in the Conservation Department (now known as DNR). She married Thomas Esch in 1941. As her family grew she worked as a librarian in the Portland Township library. After 10 years she retired in 1973 having made many improvements in how the local library serviced the community. Her love of geology was easily shared through the library and many years of school visits to classrooms. Retirement years were spent traveling throughout the United States and Canada. She is survived by one daughter, Jo (James K.) Todd of Mattawan; one son Dennis (Susan) of Haslett; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services were November 14 at the Portland First Congregational Church, where she was a lifelong member. Rev. Robert C. Nixon, pastor emeritus, officiated. Her body has been willed to science through the MSU Anatomical Research Department. Contributions are suggested to the Nature Conservancy or American Diabetes Association.
