Esch, 98, of SunWest in Sun City, Ariz., passed away on May 1, 2007 in Sun City, Ariz. Leonard was reared and schooled in Portland, and began working at age 12 at the Portland Coat Hanger Factory, at age 14 at Portland Furniture and at age 18 in the Portland Candyland Store. He began his career of 44 years with the D & C Variety Stores at age 21 in 1929 as manager of the Fenton store; managed the North Lansing store from 1931-41; was promoted to buyer in 1941 and moved to D & C, Inc. corporate headquarters in Stockbridge. He retired 33 years later in 1973 as sr. vice president and director of merchandise and moved to Sun City, Ariz. in that year. Leonard was an active member of St. Cornelius & Cyprian Catholic Church in Bunker Hill, and in retirement, served as usher at St. Clement of Rome in Sun City, Ariz. His many friends knew his lifelong love for automobiles, travel, reading, and long early-morning walks. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Myrtle (Barnes) Esch in 1980; and brothers Ferdinand, Marcellus (Harry) Ernest, Thomas Esch; and his sister Sr. M. Francesca (Anita). He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law James L. and Judy Esch of Schenectady, N.Y., Robert J. and Carol Esch of Sun City Grand, Surprise, Ariz., and William B. and Marilyn of Taylor; his daughter Linda Stratton of Carlsbad, Calif.; 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. The funeral Mass was held on May 7 at St. Clement of Rome Church, in Sun City, Ariz. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Menke Funeral Home, Sun City, Ariz.
