Essex were shocked to learn Monday forenoon of her death that morning at about seven o’clock. Mrs. Essex had been in ill health for the past 16 years and for some time seemed to have been worse. About three weeks ago she took a turn for the better and had been doing her own housework for some time. On Sunday she went, in company with Mr. Essex and Mr. and Mrs. Swartzmiller, in the latter’s automobile, on a trip to Bushnell, where she spent the day visiting with old friends and relatives. About midnight she was taken suddenly sick and although a physician was called and everything possible done to save her life, she passed away. Clara Belle Hill was born in Hiram, Portage county, Ohio, November 22, 1858. At the age of 5 years she moved with her parents and family to Bushnell. She was the last daughter in a family of ten children, two brothers, the oldest and the youngest in the family still surviving. On December 25, 1879 she was united in marriage to John Banks Essex, also of Bushnell, and to this union four children were born, Erwin, of Grand Rapids, Babe, who died in infancy, Eunice, who died at the age of 19 years, and Elmer L. Essex, of South Bend, Indiana. She also leaves a grandson, Lyle A. Essex, who together with the husband and a host of friends are left to mourn the passing of a good wife, mother and neighbor. At the time of her death, Mrs. Essex was 62 years, 11 months and 2 days old. Until the past few years she was an earnest worker in the church and aid society, both in this city and Shiloh and only gave up this work when ill health compelled her to. Funeral services were being held this afternoon at 2 o’clock, from the Church of Christ, Rev. J. C. Meese, a former pastor of the local church, officiating, assisted by Rev. H. E. Curch. Burial will be in Shanty Plains cemetery.
