Essick, died Sunday morning, 1:45 a.m. at her home, 644 East Main street. Funeral services will be held from the home Tuesday afternoon, February 6, at 2:30 o’clock. Rev. Earl Kneebone will officiate and interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Kate Ann Haight was born June 24, 1855, in Ionia city, the daughter of Peter B. Haight and Elizabeth A. (Thorn) Haight, who were early pioneers in this section from New York state. October 19, 1875, she married Louis P. Essick in Ionia. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Barker of the Congregational church of this city. The couple lived their entire sixty-four years of wedded life in Ionia. She is a member of the Episcopal church, as is Mr. Essick. Mr. Essick was associated with the Michigan state reformatory here in Ionia for at least fifty-five years or more until his retirement. Louis Essick is 89 years old. Mrs. Essick had one sister, Mrs. Jennie Haight, who died four years ago. Surviving are the husband, two daughters, Miss Elizabeth Essick of Ionia, and Mrs. Carroll Seven of Grand Rapids, and two grandchildren. Mrs. Essick had only one hobby and that was thinking of others first and herself last. She made no complaint of pain and although she was 84 years old, she continued to take care of her home, up until about two weeks ago when the heart ailment with which she had suffered for two or three years grew worse. It was expected at that time that she needed only rest before she would be able to get around again. Mrs. Essick read a great deal and sewed. She was ever active and refused to sit back and watch life go by. Mr. and Mrs. Essick had lived in their present home since 1883.
