Evans, 61, in charge of sales tax collections in Ionia and Montcalm counties for the past nine years, died unexpectedly Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at this home, at 106 Lafayette street of a heart attack. He had been on a leave of absence from his work since April 1 due to ill health. He underwent major surgery at University hospital in Ann Arbor on May 5 for the removal of a cataract. He had only been home two weeks. He was born April 16, 1889, in Bloomer township in Montcalm county, son of Charles and Ida Evans. He was a graduate of Palo high school and Ferris Institute. For a short time he was employed by the General Motors corporation before becoming employed by the State o Michigan for who he has worked for 30 years. For fifteen years of that time he has been connected with the sales tax division and lived in Ionia for nine years. He was a member of the F.and A.M. and a former member of the B.P.O.E. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ida Evans, and a sister, Mrs. Don Crawford both of Ionia. His father died in September, 1939. Funeral services will be held from the Boynton Funeral home Saturday at 3 p.m. with the Dr. Howard A. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Palo cemetery.
