Two More Added to the Long Roll of Death’s List. Charles Henry Everest Charles Henry Everest of Easton passed away on Sunday morning after an illness of only five days. He came to town on Tuesday of last week, and on the way home was taken with a chill so alarming that members of the family in the city were sent for in haste. Pneumonia developed, and the case was critical from the start. Mr. Everest was born in the state of New York, Dec. 14, 1840, and was thus just past 65 years of age. He came to Ionia county 47 years ago. At the outbreak of the war, two years later, he enlisted in the 1st Michigan Cavalry, and served four years, participating in over one hundred battles and skirmishes, including Bull Run, Gettysburg, and many others incident to the different advances on Richmond, and the long struggle around the rebel capital. He re-enlisted, and after peace was declared went with the regiment to the west. With a large number of others, who considered the end of the war the end of their term of service, he left the regiment at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., just before the Custer massacre. The department was at first inclined to regard this example of American independence as rather irregular, but afterwards granted all the men honorable discharges. Mr. Everest was a type of our best citizenship, a progressive farmer, honorable in his business relations, a kind neighbor, faithful to his obligations in all social relations, and he was held in highest esteem by a very large circle of friends. His early opportunities in the way of education were better than afforded many young men at that day, he having attended Hiram College, Ohio, at the time James A. Garfield was at the head of that institution. Mr. Everest was married to Miss Maria Bornham, at Hubbardston, on July 6, 1873. Sue survives, and also three sons: Herbert W. of Grand Rapids; Harry B., of Woodbury; and Fred S., living at home, and a member of the senior class in Ionia high school. He also leaves one brother, Frederick, of Ionia township; and one sister, Mrs. Clara Spaulding, widow of Jerry Spaulding. Funeral service at Church of Christ, on Wednesday, at 2 p.m. Interment, Highland Park.
