Charles C. Eyster were observed Monday morning at 11 o’clock at the old Mills home on Union street, the home of his two nieces, Mrs. Bess Johnson and Miss Kate Mills. His death occurred in Fairmont, W. Va., on Saturday morning, July 31. When Col. Eyster left Ionia in 1924 to make his home in Fairmont, he asked his nieces to accept the gift of a large American flag which he had had for many years. Although they wished him to keep it, they promised to care for it, and told him that on each holiday he was to think of it as they would put it up in his honor. On every Decoration day and Flag day since that time, the flag has been hung in his memory. At the funeral services Monday morning the flag hung in its usual place in front of the house as a last tribute. Services were conducted by Rev. Earl Kneebone of the St. John’s Episcopal church and interment was in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery, where his wife was buried. An honorary American Legion escort was present at the services with those attending Charles Jack, Elbert VanHetloo, H.T. MacDonough, Laurence I. Hale, Harry Myers, Otto Kimble, Frank Wirtz, Russell Voelker, and Fay Howard. Taps were sounded at the time of committal by Frank Wirtz. Flowers were in charge of Miss Reka Teusink, Miss Jeanette Nichol and Miss Nellie Brown. Bearers were Montgomery Webster, Harry Callow, Alfred Nichol, Fred Wortman, Dr. F.M. Marsh, and Herbert Powell. Lemuel Tingley, now the only surviving member of the William Borden post of the GAR attended the services. Those attending from away were Oliver Sands of Richmond, W. Va., Mrs. Emilie Sands Hartman and Mrs. Howard Showalter of Fairmont, W. Va. and Rev. and Mrs. Brickman, of Fairmont, W. Va.
