A few minutes later the news came that Helen had passed away. Helen and her mother, Mrs. James Fellows, had driven to Lansing to do some shopping and decided to return by way of Ionia, taking of course the US 16 cement road. Mrs. Fellows objected to that road as there had been so many accidents on it but Helen assured her mother that she would drive slow and they proceeded on their way. When about three miles this side of Lansing they were run into by a car coming from the west, the car striking the Fellows car with an oblique side crash tearing the side of the car and injuring its occupants. A farmer hearing the crash went to the scene of accident and saw the driver of the offending car sitting by a telephone pole. He went to the house and telephoned the state police and also for help. Mrs. Fellows and Helen were taken unconscious to the hospital where it was found Helen had sustained a fatal cut on the scalp and internal injuries, and Mrs. Fellows was bruised on almost her entire left side, with a bad foot and other injuries. The body of Helen was brought home Sunday noon. As soon as the husband and father heard of the accident, he with his daughter Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Ritter, went to Lansing where Mr. Fellows was overcome and had a heart attack of which he is subject. He also received medical attention there. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Fellows were able to be brought home. The license of the offending car was secured and it was found to have belonged to J. Stanley Walker, a Lansing insurance man. No trace of the driver has as yet been found. The father of Walker, a Lansing man, visited at the Fellows home Tuesday morning and when shown the beautiful form of Helen in her casket wept like a child and remarked that it did not seem possible that his son could have left the scene of such an accident. It is reported that about two quarts of liquor was found near the wreck. The Walker car was burned up. Miss Helen was 19 years of age and a young lady of energy and ambition. She was a graduate of our high school class of 1928. She learned the trade of beauty culture and has conducted a beauty parlor in her home several years. She had recently purchased a permanent waving machine and was doing a lucrative business. She was to have been the bride of Lyle Rockhill of Hastings at Christmas time. She was a beautiful young woman and as good as beautiful. She was unselfish and dependable and of a happy, cheerful disposition. The funeral was held at the home here Tuesday afternoon where a large company congregated. The casket of pink and lavender was surrounded by a wonderful array of flowers and the beautiful girl made a picture long to be remembered. The sermon was by Rev. O. F. Bulman of Central church and Mrs. Vera McCartney and Leon Gilson sang “My Only Hope” and “Face to Face,” accompanied by Mrs. Leon Gilson. The schoolmates of the deceased acted as escort. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery. Those in attendance at the funeral of Helen Fellows from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Lightfoot, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koester, Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Butler, all of Toledo, O; Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Gearhart and daughter Norma, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Tellier of Lansing; Leo Snyder and mother, Morenci; Ida Snyder, Napolean; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bennett, Battle Creek; Mr. and Mrs. Clare Figg, Vermontville; Mr. and Mrs. A. B.
