Filkins, aged 90 years, answered the final summons and died at the old home where he had lived so long, on Tuesday, June 13, 1922. Death was due to natural causes incident to and expected at the ripe old age to which the pioneer had attained. Marvin Filkins was born in New York state, on Sept. 21, 1832, and came with his parents, at an early age, to this state. On September 25, 1860, hew as married to Miss Betsey M. Russell, living for one summer on a farm in Keene. When Lincoln sent out his call for volunteers to defend the Union’s cause, Mr. Filkins heard and answered and served as a member of the famous Custer brigade from the time he enlisted in September, 1862, until he was honorably discharged in November, 1865. Following the war he came back to this place and settled on the farm just west of town, where he died. While the place was always home to him he did not farm it all the time and he was one of the old time stage coach drivers before the days of the railroad and when the only means of travel was by stage. He drove between Greenville and Ionia and also ran the stage into Grand Rapids for the convenience of travelers. Several winters of his life were spent in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the home of a daughter. Mr. Filkins was a charter member of Dan S. Root Post, G.A.R. and up until the time when age began to forbid, always took an active interest in the work of the organization. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Cora Green, who lived with him on the old farm and Mrs. Grace Ryerson, of Chattanooga, Tenn., besides a number of grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the old home, Friday afternoon, Rev. Osborne, of the Methodist church, officiating and burial was in Otisco cemetery.
