Finkbeiner, age 75, of rural Belding, passed away Monday evening, Oct. 25, 2004 at her home. She was born Aug. 25, 1929, in Belding, the daughter of William and Ida Nummer Updike. Gretchen lived her entire life in the Belding area and taught school for a few years at the Button School in Smyrna. She was a member of the Eastern Star Doric Chapter 75 and the Belding United Methodist Church. She was married Dec. 28, 1963 in Belding to Norman Finkbeiner and he preceded her in death in 1984. Gretchen was also preceded in death by her parents, brother Roger Updike and sister Patricia Updike. She is survived by her children and their spouses Eric Finkbeiner of Belding, Dirk and Sally Finkbeiner of Fenwick, Andrea and Andrew Schwallier of Plainwell, Lori and Philip Jackson of Belding, and Barbara Dakin of Anderson, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and her sister and brother, Marilyn Johnson of Belding and Bill and Betty Jane Updike of Greenville. Memorial services conducted by the Eastern Star Doric Chapter 75 are 2 p.m. Friday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. The family will greet relatives and friends one hour before and one hour after the Eastern Star service. A luncheon will be held at 3 p.m. at the Belding Masonic Lodge. Interment will be in Otisco Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to The Eastern Star or the American Diabetes Association.
