Born February 6, 1983 Derek was a loving & devoted Father. He loved "hanging out" with family. He enjoyed playing cards, golf, watching his children play sports & family vacations. Preceded in death by his grandparents; Dolores A.& Francis W.Thelen, Charlotte P & Rodney W.Finkbeiner, Kent Buffenbarger; uncles, Gary A Finkbeiner & Geoffrey E.Cross; also a special friend, Tyler Hamel. Survived by his wife, Jessica Buffenbarger; four children; Andrew Buffenbarger, Alyssa Buffenbarger, Ava Finkbeiner, Axton Finbeiner. Also his parents; mother, Jane Finbeiner; father Larry (Peggy) Finkbeiner; mother-in-law, Carol (Mike)Schneckenberger, brothers; Patrick (Alison) Finbeiner & Brendan (Amy) Finkbeiner; half-sister, Danica Shier; step-brothers, Curtis (Jennifer) Brinks & Chad (Delaine) Brins; step-sisters, Lisa Brins; aunts & uncles; Linda (Thelen) and Danny Weber, Phil (Mary Kay) Thelen, Tom (Lori)Thelen, Rick (MaryJo) Thelen, Mark Thelen, Ann Cross of Middleville, MI and Allyn (Nova) Finkbeiner from the Philippines. Many nieces, nephews & cousins. Derek graduated from Portland High School in 2001, where he played all sports. Derek worked at Phillip's Pet food & Supply for 18 years, where he spent time traveling to their many warehouses trouble shooting & helping them as needed. He was awarded Employee of Excellent Award in 2018. He was promoted many times. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Rev.Ryan Riley at 11 am. Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at St.Patrick Catholic Church Portland. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. Funeral luncheon will be held at the V F W Hall, 1324 E.Bridge St.Portland. Family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 pm.,with the rosary being prayed a 3:00 p.m., Monday April 25, at Lehman Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Jane Finkbeiner, 210 Quarterline St., Portland,MI 48875 for Derek's children.
