She passed away Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Hillside Acres at the age of 95. She attended both Hastings and Nashville schools. She met Royal Sheppard Fisher and they were married on April 10, 1937. They lived in Lake Odessa until 1945 at which time they moved to Hastings. Mary started study at County Normal School to become a teacher about 1948. She went on to finish her various degrees, including her master’s, at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Mary taught at the Little Brick School, Quimby School, Dowling School, Freeport School and Thornapple Kellogg School in Middleville. She belonged to the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. Mary also belonged to the First United Methodist Church in Hastings and taught Sunday school and youth groups. She was very active with church in the 1940s and 1950s. Mary went through many tough times throughout her life. Cancer was one of the biggest battles. She was a survivor through and through – she outlived most of her physicians, as she promised she would. Dementia took its toll and during the last few years she was not the same. She resided at Hillside Acres where they took excellent care of her for about two and a half years. Mary leaves behind one daughter, Nola (Tom) Edwards. She had four grandchildren, Sandra (Mike) Fox, Scott (Jayne) Edwards, Kim (Tim) Voshell and Julie Edwards (Scott) Mullarkey. She had nine grandchildren, Alex Fox, Jerin and Justin Voshell, Christopher, Kelcey and Tiffany Edwards, Aleah and Lauren Mullarkey. She has many nieces and nephews also. “I recently met two of mother’s students. They told me how much they enjoyed mother. They said she was one teacher that was not in the profession for money that she really cared about the students. They enjoyed being in her classes,” states her daughter Nola. She was loved by all that met her and will be missed by all that knew her. Visitation and funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the Lauer Family Funeral Homes-Wren Chapel, 1401 N. Broadway in Hastings, followed by interment in Fuller Cemetery.
