When Miss Bessie Fisher left her work as cashier in Davis Bros.’ shoe store at Lansing to spend the Christmas holiday with the home folks in Portland it was with a light heart. She looked forward to the short stay here with happy anticipations. Last Wednesday morning, a little more than a week later, she passed away at the home of her father, George Fisher, who lives near the Shotwell bridge. She had a sore throat when she came from Lansing and when a physician was called he pronounced it scarlet fever. It is believed she contracted the disease while handling money at her desk in the Lansing store. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon and were necessarily private. The remains were interred in Portland cemetery. Miss Fisher was born here Sept. 17, 1892, receiving her early education in a district school and then attending the public school in Portland. For six years she was an operator in a telephone exchange at Battle Creek and then went to Lansing to accept the position with Davis Bros. Her brothers and sisters are Guy and Edith Fisher, who reside at home, and Miss Martha Baugh, adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Baugh, of Collins. Peter Bennett and family drove to Lansing the day before Christmas to bring their daughter, Vera Rice, home and Miss Fisher came with them. As a precautionary measure Mrs. Rice is to remain with her parents in Danby until the danger from contagion has passed. Miss Fisher was a competent young lady, as testified by the length of time she held various positions and her untimely death brings sorrow to many hearts.
