October 23, 2021 Margaret Fitzgerald Margaret Fitzgerald, 91, passed away October 19, 2021. She was born December 2, 1929. On November 15, 1951, she married Robert Fitzgerald. Together they raised 5 children; Carolyn (Loren) Riker of Ionia; Peggy Hill of Lansing; Robin Suomi of Falls Church, VA; Mike (Laura) Fitzgerald of Fenwick; Carrie(David) Webster of Clayton,NC. Her grandchildren are Tina, Scott, Justin, Jared, Matt, Michaela, Lee, Erin, Ethan and Abby; Great-grandchildren are Shana, Dakota, Austin, Emmett, Collins, Harper, Logan, Aubrey, Katie, Korver, Mila, Saige, Ty, Brynn, Ellie, Gabbie and Naomi; great-great-grandchildren are Kenadie and Kaiden and Lexie and Chloe; brother, Frank Fishell; several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, Robert Fitzgerald; her parents Lloyd and Neva Fishell; her siblings, Vivian Lake, Pat (Vere) and Howard Fishell; her nieces and a nephew, Darlene Eaves,Beverly Wall and Arden Lake; and her grandchildren, Ross Fitzgerald and Kevin Buskirk. Throughout her life, Margaret was very active in her community. She served as 4-H Leader for 24 years in the areas of cooking, gardening, sewing and horticulture, and as Secretary and Treasure of the Palo Cemetery Association for 24 years. Margaret was a devoted VFW Auxiliary member for 59 years, spending 51 of those years as a member of the Sheridan VFW Auxiliary 5065 in various leadership roles. She was well-known for her Bingo support for 50 years, supporting Bingo on Tuesday and Friday nights, and the Ionia Free Fair Bingo annually. She served two terms as Sheridan VFW Auxiliary President, and earned All State Auxiliary President in 1992-93.She also served one term as District 9 VFW Auxiliary President of Michigan, tying for 3rd place honors within a field of 133 Michigan Auxiliaries. Last of all, Margaret was a Foster grandparent in Ionia County, and was awarded Grandma of the Year in 2014-2015. Margaret was the oldest resident of the Village of Palo. Funeral services will be held on Saturday October 23, 2021 at 11 AM with Pastor Melissa Wagner officiating at Hurst Funeral Home Greenville. Visitations will be held on Friday from 2 to 4 PM and 6-9 PM and 10 AM to 11 AM on Saturday at the funeral home. The burial will be in Palo Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Sheridan VFW Post inSheridan. At the request of family, masks are required for those attending visitation and the funeral services.The funeral service may also be viewed via livestream at www.hurstfh.com. Memorial contributions may be given to; Ionia County Toys for Tots; Palo Cemetery Association; or Sheridan VFW Auxiliary Post 5065 for the purchase for new Bingo equipment.
