Fleckenstein, 66, 419 Union street, died unexpectedly about 5 p.m., Wednesday following a heart attack on the outskirts of Detroit. He was returning from a business trip at the time and apparently became ill while driving his automobile. He was taken to a hospital in Warren where death occurred. He spent nearly his entire lifetime in Ionia and for many years lived in the former home of his parents at the corner of Union and Tower streets. Although in semi-retirement the past year he continued as a manufacturers’ agent and engaged in other industrial activities. He received his early schooling in the Ionia school system but received his secondary education and was graduated from Kentucky Military academy in 1916. He was also a graduate from the school of engineering of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass. During World War I he was in the aviation branch of United States Navy. His talents were devoted to industry at an early age and he invented and held the patent on the first visible gasoline pump. In that business venture he and his father were partners. For many years he was interested in Michigan crude oil and was the organizer of Crystal Refining Co. at Carson City. He served as an official of the firm until it was sold a few years ago. Much of his spare time was devoted to the collection of United States stamps. He had one of the best collections in this field and a national reputation. He was also an ardent sportsman and made many hunting trips with his wife. During the years he maintained his interests in Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was extremely active in its fund raising and other affairs. He served as an educational counselor and arranged for scholarships for many students. He wore the robes of MIT and represented that institution on the platform when Dr. Judson Foust was installed as president of Central Michigan university. His lodge and fraternal activities were limited to membership in Detroit Athletic club. He was born April 20, 1897 in Madison, Wis., the son of Alex and Adelaide Jackson Fleckenstein and came to Ionia with his parents when he was six years of age. He is survived by his wife Rene and two daughters, Mrs. Jacqueline Wright of Walled Lake, and Mrs. Joan Misner of Whitmore Lake, five grandchildren, a brother, R.P. Fleckenstein of Flint. Funeral service will be Saturday morning at 10:30 at Boynton funeral home. The Rev. W.G. Sawyier will officiate and interment will be in Highland Park cemetery.
