Florence, a stone mason, resident of Ionia ten years or more, died suddenly Thursday, while sitting at the breakfast table in Butler’s restaurant on Second Street. John Doyle who was at table with him, said Florence suddenly leaned forward, with his head on his hand, and breathed torturously. His face turned black and then white. It was first thought he had a fit and the usual remedies were applied. But he soon ceased to breathe and Dr. Ogden who had been telephoned for pronounced him dead. Coroner Cook held an inquest at the Brown Furniture Company’s rooms about 9:30, with the following jury drawn by Officer Will Taylor: Will Wedge, Frank Eddy, Matthew Beahan, Clarence Snyder, Geo. Rector and Clyde Sessions. The testimony of Dr. Ogden, C. C. Butler, John Doyle, Frank Owens and Chas. H. Bradley was taken. The doctor expressed the opinion that death resulted from valvular disease of the heart, which was confirmed by the circumstances as narrated by other witnesses, and the jury returned a verdict to that effect. Florence had been employed on bridge work in Berlin during the summer but had been doing janitor work for boarding at the restaurant for some weeks. His age would seem to be 60 or over. E has no family, his wife dying some years ago. A brother lives in Jackson, and a niece, Mrs. Mary Jackson, in this city. He serve in Co. C., 6th Mich. Infantry and 6th Michigan heavy artillery, and was drawing a pension of $12 per month, granted in 1892 for gunshot wound in left hand, rheumatism and heart disease. Attorney E. M. Davis has his pension papers in charge, having looked after the business for him. Telegram from Jackson announced that some of the friends will arrive here tonight.
