Foght, a resident of this vicinity all his life, died suddenly Tuesday morning at the post office where he had gone for his mail. Mr. Foght was 84 years old the 29th of last October and had been in usual health, although not as robust as when younger, for some time. Yet he drove his car, attended church and his usual business. He lived on the farm which his father, Solomon Foght received on a government patent in 1851 and cleared himself. Thirty-five years ago M. L. Foght moved into the village of Lake Odessa. He has been prominent in republican politics of the county for many years, having held the offices of justice of the peace, supervisor and county chairman of the republican committee. His first marriage was in 1865 to Miss Sarah Hunt of Lake Odessa, and 11 years ago he was married to Mrs. Julia Zelner. Mr. Foght was a men of unusual ability, a loyal citizen and a sincere Christian. He had been actively engaged in municipal interests and was depended upon for advice in legal matters, he being appointed frequently as administrator of the estates of deceased persons. His church affiliations were with the Calvary United Brethren church where he often led a service and acted as Sunday school superintendent or Bible class teacher. He leaves his widow, and three daughters, Mrs. Charles Gattner of Lake Odessa, Mrs. Lee Otis of Saranac, and Mrs. William L.G. McIntosh of Detroit; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, also three sisters, Mrs. Frances Curtis, Mrs. Charles Reese and Mrs. Charles Champlin, and a brother Frank L. Foght, all of Lake Odessa and vicinity. The funeral will be held at the Calvary U.B. church, Thursday afternoon, Rev. Ronald A. Hoffman officiating, burial will be at Lakeside. Obituary of Marquis L. Foght. Marquis L. Foght, a lifelong resident of Odessa township, the eldest child of Solomon and Sarah Foght, pioneer settlers of Odessa township was born October 27, 1852, and died March 9, 1937, at the age of 84 years. He attended district school and the select boarding school at Woodland, Mich., and following that he taught in several of the township schools. In July, 1875, he married Sarah E. Hunt, who preceded him in death 20 years ago this month. To this union were born four children, Mrs. Ina Gattner, of Lake Odessa; a son Ernie who died at the age of six; Mrs. Nellie Otis of Saranac, and Mrs. Artie McIntosh of Dearborn, Mich. More than fifty years ago he joined the West Odessa United Brethren church which was then newly organized and has been a constant, untiring worker ever since. On August 5, 1923 he was married to Mrs. Julia Zelner and they resided in the village since. Besides his widow and daughters, he leaves one brother, Frank L., three sisters, Mrs. Frances Curtis, Mrs. Ida Reese, and Mrs. Ada Champlin, all of Lake Odessa; twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, three step- children, Mrs. Etta Blough of Hastings, Otto Zelner of St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Olive Pilkinton of Morenci, Mich., several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. During his life time he has held many offices of trust, serving for many years as supervisor of Odessa township. His guardianship has brought comfort to many an orphaned child or bereaved man or woman. His life has exemplified the true Christian and of him it can be said, “He has lived in the house by the side of the road and been a friend to man.” The funeral was very largely attended Thursday afternoon at the Calvary United Brethren church, Rev. Ronald A. Hoffman, his pastor, preaching the sermon. He also sang appropriate numbers. Friends and relatives were present at the funeral from Detroit, Freeport, Sunfield, Woodland, Tamarac, Dowagiac, Morenci, Royal Oak, Hastings, St. Paul, Minn., Houghton Lake, Mich., and Mishawaka, Ind.
