Feb. 24, 1977 Well-Known Teacher Passes Away Josie Watrous Fogle, age 79, well-known area teacher passed away on February 9, 1977, after a brief illness, at Mason General Hospital. Josie L. Hicks, daughter of Charles E. and Fannie (Dann) Hicks was born in Wayland, Michigan on July 22, 1897. During her childhood she resided in Allegan and Barry Counties and later graduated from Hastings High School and Barry County Normal. On June 1, 1918 she was united in marriage to LeRoy E.; Watrous. They moved to Shiawassee County where Rev. Watrous pastored the New Lathrop Wesleyan Methodist Church until his death on February 6, 1920. She returned to Hastings where she devoted her life to teaching. Except for one year in Allegan County, her teaching career spanned the years of 1917-1945, and included Dowling, Carlton Center from 1928-1934 and Woodland from 1934-1945, where she was also a member of the United Brethren Church. She then taught in the Holt Public Schools from 1945-1956 and was the principal of one of the Hold Elementary Schools at the time of her retirement. While teaching in Barry County, she earned her Life Certificate and a B.S. Degree from Central Michigan University with additional studies at Ohio State University, northwestern University and Western Michigan University. On Dec. 22, 1953 she married Floyd E. Fogle, well known Mason area farmer and former MSU teacher. They resided at 2595 Okemos Rd., Mason and both were members of the Hold United Methodist Church, where Mrs. Fogle was a member of the Julia Lillian Circle and just recently had been awarded an Honorary Membership in the United Methodist Women's Organization. She also was a member of the WCTU and National Retired Teachers Association. Preceding her in death, bedsides her parents and Rev. Watrous, were a brother, George A Hicks of Lansing and a great granddaughter. Surviving are her husband, Floyd E. Fogle of Mason; one daughter, Mrs. Edmund (Esther) Howard of Grosse Pointe; three grandchildren, Stephen L. Howard, Alan C. Howard and Constance Howard. Surviving too are 8 great grandchildren and one brother, C.E. (Earl) Hicks of Lansing; Stanley L. Dann, local, is one of the surviving cousins, besides several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are one stepson, George E. Fogle of Mason; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert Leonard of Laingsburg; 11 step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. Religious services for Mrs. Fogle were held February 12, 1977 at the Hold United Methodist Church, the Rev. Myron K. Williams officiated. Bearers were Mr. Fogle's six grandsons and arrangements were made by Estes-Leadley Funeral Home, with interment at Riverside Cemetery, Hastings.
