Charles B. Foreman, another of Ionia county's pioneers, died, April 1, 1900, at his farm home three miles north of Ionia, where he had lived for the past 42 years. He was born in South Buffalo township, Armstrong county, Pa., April 17, 1815. At the age of 18 years he commenced to learn the tailor's trade, and being very ambitious soon completed his trade and moved to Worthington, Pa., where he went into business for himself and remained there until 1845, when his health failing him, he sold his business and moved to Salem, Ohio, and engaged in the hotel business where he remained until 1858. His health again failing him, on the advice of the physician he decided to try farming and having a cousin, the late Foreman Sloan, in Michigan, who had written him glowing accounts of the state, he decided to sell out and move to this state. In that year he sold his business at Salem, Ohio, and bought a piece of land near St. Louis, Mich. On a visit to St. Louis he was not suited with his purchase and decided not to take up his residence there, and came to Ionia, and later traded his land in part payment for what was known as the Reuben Smith farm, on which he took up his residence and lived there until his death. His farm life soon brought him renewed health and happiness. He was married May 25, 1844, at Worthington, Pa., to Miss Mary Cooper, who died April 14, 1894. From this union there were born to them ten children, eight of whom survive him, Margaret, Elm Creek, Neb.; Samantha, of Easton; Jennie, of Otisco; Louise and Robert, of Ionia; Eli T. and Charles of Grand Rapids, and James of Grayling, also twenty grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Seven of his children were present at his funeral. Mr. Foreman was an upright citizen, a kind husband and father, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was born of Presbyterian parents, and was baptized into the church when 12 years of age. He always held to the Christian religion, and his life was consistent with his early training. The funeral was held April 3, from the home, Rev. G. K. Berry of the Church of Christ officiating. HIs four sons bore the casket, in which were the loving remains to its last resting place in Highland Park.
