Charles D. Foreman, who would have been 28 years old on March 16, has been reported killed in action on Luzon on February 8, according to a regret telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Foreman, 505 Jones street, early Thursday morning. The Ionia soldier who entered service in March, 1941, and who was home on one short furlough in September, 1941, had been overseas since September 26, 1942. For many months he was stationed on the island of Helo, assigned to an infantry unit of the Sixth army. From there he was sent to Guadalcanal and later transferred to New Britain island. On December 23, 1944, he embarked from New Britain to land with MacArthur’s forces on Luzon on the 9th of January. Accompanying the telegram Thursday were two Japanese post cards Sergeant Foreman had written on February 3, reporting that there were plenty of souvenirs to be had there. His Last Letter The last letter Mr. and Mrs. Foreman had received from their son was written January 17. He received his basic training at Camp Roberts, Calif., and San Luis Obispo, Calif., before he was sent to Fort Lewis, Wash., and to Los Angeles, Calif., for guard duty. He wore a number of service ribbons and medals for sharpshooting, in machine gunnery, pistol and rifle marksmanship. Sergeant Foreman was graduated from Ionia high school in 1935 and was a shipping clerk for five years at the Grand Valley Packing company before he entered the armed forces. Surviving are his parents, two sisters, Miss Betty Foreman, employed in an Ionia war plant, and Genevieve Foreman, seaman second class in the WAVEs, assigned to the naval research laboratory at Washington, D.C. The local Red Cross has notified Seaman Foreman of her brother’s death and she expects to arrive home on leave soon.
