The Ionia County News, Thursday, May 10, 1928
Funeral services Wednesday marked the passing of John Wright Fortune, 81, 
resident of this county, who died Sunday afternoon at the home of his 
daughter, Mrs. Herbert Fortune, at Muir.  Mr. Fortune was one of the type of 
citizens who have made this county famous as one of prosperous, well kept 
farms, his property while he still was able to farm, having been one of the 
best in the community.  He was a man who took pride in his affairs and served 
two townships in public office during his life.

He was born November 9, 1846 in Yates township, Orleans County, New York, but 
came to this state at an early age.  In December 1870 he was married to Corlie 
E. Pike and there were eight children born to the union.  Five surviving are 
Augustus Fortune, Ionia township; Mrs. Sarah Edkley and Mrs. Susan Dalzell, 
both living north of Muir, Victor Fortune of Jackson and George Fortune, 
Coldwater, N.Y.  After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Fortune started 
housekeeping in a long cabin but five years later Mr. Fortune constructed a 
brick home and fine barns on his farm.  The buildings were considered the 
finest in the county at the time they were constructed.

In 1900 his first wife died and some time later he was united in marriage to 
Mrs. Mary Eckley who died in 1918.  In 1960 Mr. Fortune bought the farm in 
Lyons township now owned by Lester Ross.  He operated this farm until 1910 
when he sold it and moved to Muir.  In 1921 he married Mrs. Mary Randall who 
lived but a year after the marriage.  He was for several years an Ionia 
township school director and served Lyons township as a road supervisor for a 
period of a few years.
