Feb. 5, 2013 Dr. Donald Judson Foster, 73 of Portland, passed away Feb. 4, 2013 from a two month illness. Donald was born Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939 in Stanton, Mich. He was the son of Donald (Odel) and Dorothy (DeArmond) Foster. Donald grew up in Lyons and graduated from Lyons High School in 1957. Following high school, Donald enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he began working at Oldsmobile in Lansing, Mich. He started out as an hourly worker and rose through the ranks to General Supervisor. He retired from Oldsmobile Sept. 1, 1992. He went to work the following day for Alchem Aluminum in Coldwater, Mich., as a consultant. When that assignment was concluded, in June of 2000, Donald enjoyed retirement for a few years until going to work for Volt Sciences (John Deere) in China the fall of 2005. Donald spent the next seven years working in China on a schedule of four weeks on and two weeks off. Donald was forced to leave that job when he was admitted to the hospital Dec. 9, 2012. Donald earned his associate’s degree from Lansing Community College in Lansing Community College in Lansing, Mich., his Bachelor’s degree from Northwood University in Midland, Mich., his master’s degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich., and his Ph.D. from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minn. Donald is survived by his wife, Donna (Kuhtz) Foster; his daughter Diana (Tom) Smith; and two grandsons, Travis Judson (Lyndsy) and Gabriel Charles. Also surviving is one brother, Gilbert (Nancy) of Florida and one sister, Patricia Smith (Kenneth) of Ionia. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jackie Lee Foster. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Portland, Mich., on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home of Ionia. His final resting place will be in Ferris Center Cemetery. For those desiring donations may be made to the Hospice House in Lansing, Michigan.
