All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Patricia Currigan currigan1932@comcast.net January 31, 2022, 8:15 am Lake Odessa Wave-Times March 12, 1931 LEAVES RECORD OF LONG USEFUL LIFE Herrick Fox, Aged 81 Years, Public Service Sixty Years, Leaves Many Friends Besides Family After a period of 42 years in the same locality, Herrick Fox of the Carr district, northeast of Lake Odessa passed away at the home of his daughter Mr and Mrs Donald Goodemoot Thursday afternoon. Less than two weeks Mr Fox had been confined to his bed but the weakened condition of advanced age took its toll quickly. Mr.Fox was one of those faithful, hardy men who never give up under difficulties but persist even in the face of handicap. Early in his married life while working in a mill in Trufant he lost one of his hands, but with much persistence he became proficient in doing his farm work and continued this until a few years ago when age required him to ease up on active farming. For sixty years he held public office and then for the last 42 years as thee head officer in the Carr school district. As a Christian he was particularly interested in the Carr church were for years e officiated ad aided in the church choir. His unassuming loyal manner made him a true disciple of the God he served. Everyone admired and no one criticized. Mrs Fox, who has been much more of an invalid for several years than her husband, is at the home of her son Bert Fox in South Ionia. She was unable to attend the funeral which was largely attended at the Goodemoot home in Odessa township on Saturday afternoon. Rev.W.F. Kendrick of the First Methodist church of Ionia gave the sermon emphasizing the three lines the deceased was interested in the Home, the School, and the Church. Rev. H.W.Bugbee of the Wesleyan church offered prayer. The pallbearers were Arch Henderson, Benjamin Koutz, Marinus Moe and Bert Haynor. Burial was at Lakeside Cemetery. Amoung those from away to attend the funeral were Mrs Florence Houghton, Frank VanHorn, Mrs Floyd Kerkum and daughter Fern, and William Crawford of Pontiac; Mr and Mrs Caff Witbeck, Mrs Frank Yarhouse and son of Evart; Mr and Mrs Bert Fox, Mr and Mrs Arthur Fox and children, Mrs William Rawley, Mr and Mrs Arthur Clark of Ionia and Mr and Mrs Harold Goodrich of Grand Rapids. OBITUARY Herrick W.Fox was born August 22, 1849 at Mt. Clemens, Mich. and died March 5, 1931, at the home of his daughter Mrs Donald Goodemoot, at the age of 81 years, six months and eleven days. He was married to Mary E.Chapman, March 13, 1873 at Trufant, Mich., They made their home there until 1885, when they moved to Odessa township on a farm where they lived until two years ago, when his health and the health of his wife necessitated their living with their children. The deceased was a loyal Christian gentleman for many years. In 1909 he united with the Wesleyan Methodist Church and he and is wife greatly enjoyed many gatherings in their home when friends met and gospel songs were sung. He was a most faithful husband and father and was cheerful and active until two weeks ago when he took to his bed and passed away Thursday afternoon. Besides his wife he leaves three children, Albert I. of Ionia, Florence A Goodemoot of Sebewa and Sarah A Goodemoot of Odessa. one daughter died in infancy. There are 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The deceased had the remarkable record of holding public office all his life from the time he was 21 years of age. He served as director of the Carr school district for 42 years. he was always intensely interested in schools and the advance of education. This with his interest in home and church endeared him to a large circle of friends. CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank the friends and neighbors for their many acts of kindness and sympathy, the Sebewa Community club, the Carr Church Society and all others who sent flowers at the time of the illness and death of our husband and father, also the ministers for their services in the time of our sorrow.
