Mrs. Phoebe Fraser, and aged and eccentric woman who lived an isolated life on her little farm a mile east of Prairie Creek pond, was found drowned in her cistern, at an early hour this morning, by a man who went to the place to do some plowing. She was seen about her place on Sunday, so her absence on Monday created no particular alarm to those who were accustomed to seeing her occasionally. The man who went to the farm to do the plowing, after receiving no response to a rap on the door, entered the house. Nobody was to be found, but the surroundings were not in that order they are wont to be after the old lady had her work done up, so he began to search the premises. The rotted cover to the cistern had fallen in, so he bethought him to “fish it,” – filled about two-thirds full of water. He was about to abandon this proceeding, when he let down a rake and pulled the body to the surface. No idea of suicide is entertained by anyone who is at all advised of her or her affairs. It is the quite general belief that she fell in accidentally. She was aged 73 years, and was possessed of some property and money. She was an eccentric character, though by no means illiterate. She had for many years done work at house cleaning, and was known to very many Ionia people in this relation. Friends came to the city early this afternoon after a coroner. [Transcriber's Note: There is a notation on the obituary card that she was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.] File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/f/fraser31890nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb
