Longtime Ionia merchant, Henrietta French, dies.

Ionia’s downtown retailers mourned today the death of one of their eldest
members, Henrietta French, 90, who died early today.

Mr. French, a life-long resident of Ionia County, was involved in the operation
of the G.W. French store on Main Street from 1936, when her husband, Lyle, died
until her death.  She and her surviving son, Robert the third generation of
Frenches to operate the store, saw the it evolve from strictly a music store to
its present operation involving furniture, gifts and cards as well as musical
supplies.

She was born Nov. 6, 1889, in Orange Township, the daughter of Edward and Sarah
Jane (Little) Weisgerber.  She attended Ionia public schools and graduated from
Ionia High School in 1910.  She then taught three years at the Benedict School
before marrying Lyle in 1913 at the Weisgerber family home on Kelsey Highway. 
The Rev. C.B. Hanson of the LeValley Methodist Church performed the ceremony.

The couple made their home at 40 Lovell Place where Mrs. French resided for the
rest of her life.  Her business activity included attending shows and traveling
on buying trips as late as August of this year.

She was a member of the Ionia Business and Professional Women, Woman’s Literary
Club and First United Methodist Church.

Besides her son, she is survived by several nieces and nephews.  She was
preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Ann, in 1927 as well as two brothers,
William and Robert Weisgerber and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Wicks and Mrs.
Violet Sykes.

Funeral arrangements are being made by the Leddick Funeral Home, and were
incomplete at press time.

Funeral services for Henrietta W. French, 90, of Ionia, who died Friday will be
Monday at 2 p.m. at the Leddick Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Hausermann
officiating.  Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery.  The family will receive
friends and relatives at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 and Sunday from 2
to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.  A memorial fund has been established for the First
United Methodist Church organ fund.  Contributions may be left at the funeral
home.
