He was born in Grand Rapids, on Dec. 4, 1913, the son of Ora May and Ernest Friedli. He was married to Ruth VandenHout, the mother of his children, for 30 years, and later married Roselyn Tucker Troske. Both preceded him in death. Paul was the owner of Paul’s Barber Shop in Saranac, beginning in 1942, finally retiring at the age of 88, and turning his business over to his granddaughter, Allison Leland and grandson, Tucker McPherson. He loved barbering and people and has many happy memories of all of his customers. He was a farm boy before becoming a barber and an avid horseman for many years. He lived with his youngest daughter and husband, Ora and James McPherson and enjoyed being part of their family for several years. He is survived by his daughter, Ora (James) McPherson of Saranac, son-in-law, Benjamin Rusnell of Marshallville, Ohio (formerly of Ionia); grandchildren, Karen (Fred) Bradley of Middleville, Dawn (James “Sonny”) Kelley of Marshallville, Ohio, Tucker McPherson and Allison Leland of Saranac, and Shannon Gleason of Ionia; great grandchildren Audra (Benjamin) Kowalski of Caledonia, Patrick Bradley of Middleville, Erica Gleason, John, Jade and James Leland, and Alana McPherson of Saranac, and Bruce Bell of Ionia; and step-great- grandson, Todd Kelley of Akron, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wives, and daughter Anna Rusnell. He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac with Pastor Al McDonald officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Lowell. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to West Michigan Hospice.
