He was born the son of Ralph and Lucy (Halladay) Friend on Aug 6, 1898, in Sebewa. He attended Portland Schools, served in France in World War I and was recently presented France’s highest award, the National Order of Legion of Honor, for his service in France during WWI. He married Gertie Colley in 1920. She preceded him in death in 1990. He worked for 30 years at Ypsilanti-Reed in Ionia and also at Ivan Clark Manufacturing in Lyons, where he retired in 1959. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion in Ionia. Surviving are his two daughters, Mrs. June Seiler of Portland and Mrs. Marilyn Powell of Big Pine Key, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and 26 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 17 at 11 a.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, Ionia. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
