He had just finished taking care of his horse and started for the house, but died before reaching there. The cause of death was heart disease. Another Publication: The Portland Observer, Wednesday, June 4, 1899 Last week’s edition of The Observer was partly printed when word was received at the office that Frank Friend had died very suddenly at his home in this village. He was taking care of his horse when he fell upon the barn floor and died soon after being taken to the house. He had been for many years a sufferer from asthma and heart trouble, but the immediate cause of his death is said to have been apoplexy, the primary cause, however, being a sunstroke which he received in the army. He was 55 years of age and leaves a widow and one son. Deceased was a native of Ohio, but came to Sebewa in 1855 and continued to reside there until a few years ago, when he went to Sunfield and engaged in the harness business in a small way, moving his business from there to Portland and working at it when he was able. He was also in the hotel business for a short time. He was a good citizen and was a constable at the time of his death. He was a brave soldier and during the war was a prisoner in both Libbey and Andersonville prisons. He was formerly a member of the Sunfield Post, G.A.R., but at the time of his death was not a member of the Grand Army. Funeral services were conducted from his late home on Thursday last by Revs. Millard and Bray and interment made in Portland cemetery. Burial was made with Grand Army honors, a detachment from Portland Post attending.
