The daughter of the late LaVerne and Opal (Hendrickson) Christensen. Ila was born near Belding, on Feb. 25, 1936. She married Jed Fulkerson on Aug. 10, 1957, in Sheridan. Ila is survived by her devoted husband, Jed, her children, Vicki Fulkerson (Alan Hinks) of Grand Haven, Pamela (James) Weeldreyer of Lovelock, Nev., Fred (Ellen) Fulkerson of Keystone, Colo., and Wendy (Dale) Summers of Ann Arbor; her grandchildren, Dorothy and Clara Trippel, Robert and Emily Weeldreyer, Ethan and Kayla Fulkerson and Benjamin and Nicholas Summers; her sister, Opal Linebaugh of Belding; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father and her brothers; Arthur, Sherwin and Robert Christensen. Graduating as salutatorian of her high school class in Sheridan, Ila received a scholarship which allowed her to attend Central Michigan College of Education and earn a two-year teaching certificate. She taught for a time in Greenville before returning to school. She received a bachelor of science in education in 1960, graduating with the first class of Central Michigan University. She moved to Midland with her young family and taught at Floyd and Longview Elementary Schools. Ila was a homemaker of extraordinary abilities and knew how to make a house a home. She had an excellent eye for design, from handcrafted quilts and clothing to landscaping, interior design, and architecture. She loved to travel and was the chief organizer of many family trips across the United States. Ila remained active despite physical challenges and has been an inspiration to her family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and her counsel was often sought by many. Ila lived most of her adult life in Midland and enjoyed the past eighteen winters with Jed at their home among the red rocks and blue sky of Sedona, Ariz. Over the years, Ila was active in 4-H, Mid-Michee Bowman, the American Association of University Women, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Central Michigan Daylily Society, several quilting and investment study groups, and Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She valued the friendships she made along the way and appreciated the many caregivers who spent time with her family. Funeral services will take place 11 a.m. Thursday from the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St., Midland. Pastor Michael Sawicki of the Aldersgate Methodist Church will officiate with interment to follow in Midland Cemetery. Ila's family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.
