Marvel L. Gage, 68, of Northlake, Ill., formerly of Ionia, died Monday in
Chicago.  Born Jan. 14, 1920, in Ionia, she was the daughter of Joseph R. and
Myrtle Hancock Loper.  She was graduated from Muir High School in 1938 and was
married to Gordon Gage March 31, 1941.

She helped her husband operate Gage’s service station in Muir in the 1950s and
then worked at Brown Corporation in the 1960s until her retirement.  She was a
shortstop for the Friar’s Ale baseball team of Ionia, which won the state
championship in 1936, and was also a member of the Moose Lodge of Ionia.  She
was a member of the First Christian Church in Ionia and of Muir First Christian
Church, serving as deaconess for both for several years.  She also taught Sunday
school at the Muir church.

Surviving are two daughters, Ruth L. Hasemann of Northlake, Ill., and Mrs.
Thomas J. (Terry L.) Morris of Anchorage, Alaska; four grandchildren; two
brothers, Charles Loper and Marvin Loper, both of Belding; two sisters Lulu
Lewis of Belding and Helen Cottrell of Ionia; and several nieces, nephews and
cousins.  She was preceded in death by her brother, Leonard Loper, father-in-law
of Don Leddick, former owner of Leddick Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Muir First Christian Church,
with the Rev. F. Michael Valentine officiating.  Burial will be in Muir
Cemetery.  The family will be at the Main Street Chapel of Montgomery-Cook
Funeral Home Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  A memorial has been
established for the American Diabetes Foundation, in care of the funeral home.
