Gais, 83, of Greenville, passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at United Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He was born Nov. 26, 1915, in Belding, the son of Russell F. and Ida G. Denman Gais. He graduated from Belding High School with the class of 1933. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was the owner and operator of the former Rustic Gardens Floral Shop and Greenhouse in Belding. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Belding, American Legion Ray I. Booth Post 101 of Greenville, a life member of the Belding Masonic Lodge, and former member of the Shriners. He also was a past president of the Belding Lions Club. He was married Oct. 28, 1939, in Belding, to Alice Phillips, and she survives with their children, Sandra A. Gais, John P. and Ladeidra Brown Gais, all of Grand Rapids; three grandchildren, Wendy Gais, Jamie Thomas and Bradley Kloostra; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Nathan Thomas. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Carlton, in 1992. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastor Fred Crandall officiating. Interment will be in River Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church or the American Heart Association.
