Galloup, 37, of 630 East Lincoln avenue, died Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s hospital in Grand Rapids, where he had been a patient for one week. He was born in Greenville, July 4, 1918 and was the son of Jess and Martha (Cross) Galloup. He served 52 months in the service during World War II, was a member of the Ionia Elks, the Ionia Hunting and Fishing club, Blackhawk Archery club and was employed by the Ionia State Hospital, for the past seven years. Surviving are his wife, Lois (Jane), one son, Cole, six years of age; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Galloup, one sister, Mrs. Ruth Rice, all of Ionia and one brother, Claude of Sheridan. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, May 25 at 2 o’clock at the Myers funeral home. Interment will be in Balcom cemetery. He was serving with the U.S. Army during the actual attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 and returned to the United States before he was transferred to Berlin where he was on the front lines, going through the battle of the bulge and served there until he was discharged at the end of the war. He was staff sergeant in care of supplies. Mr. Galloup owned his own business, the Ionia Metal Awning Company, where he serviced from the basement of his home, in Lincoln avenue, this being his fourth year. He also served a short time with the Ionia city police force before his employment at the Ionia State Hospital. -------------------- Funeral services for Vern A. Galloup, 37, who died Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s hospital in Grand Rapids, were held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Myers funeral home. Interment was in Balcom cemetery. Mrs. Gene Clark and Mrs. Franklin Hansbarger were in charge of flowers. The Rev. Robert Watt of Lyons and the Rev. Paul Knaak of Ionia officiated. He was a World War II veteran, a member of the Ionia Elks, the Ionia Hunting and Fishing club and the Blackhawk Archery club and was last employed by the Ionia State Hospital. Bearers were Wallace Starkweather, John Lowe, Donald Lance, George Robinson, Chester Speice and William Baragray. Employees of the state hospital were honorary bearers. Attending from out of town were business associates and their wives, state hospital employees. Relatives from out of town were Jack Currigan of Lansing, Mrs. John Currigan of Lyons, Mr. and Mrs. Clare Galloup and Claude Galloup of Sheridan and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Parcher of Palo.
