Pere Marquette Claim Agent in Ionia - First Telegrams Fail to Reach Frank Gardner at His Home in Chicago - Funeral Friday. Claim Agent Gillett of the Pere Marquette was in the city today to examine into the circumstances surrounding the accident which resulted in the death of John Gardner, who died about 5 o’clock last night in the city hospital. Whether or not an inquest would be held had not been determined. Telegrams sent last night in an effort to locate Frank Gardner, of Chicago, failed to reach him and others were dispatched this morning. It was expected that he would be found during the day and that the funeral will be held Friday at an hour to be set. Mr. Gardner lingered for about three hours after being struck by the Pere Marquette switch engine Tuesday afternoon at about 2 o’clock but never rallied from the shock attendant upon the terrible injuries which he received. Efforts toward relief were confined to easing his pain and stimulating his heart action until he might rally sufficiently to permit a further amputation of his crushed leg. However, these efforts were in vain. Mr. Gardner during his lifetime met with considerable misfortune. He became lame early in life as a result of an attack of rheumatism. Later he was kicked by a horse and injured so that his life was despaired of and a few years ago a mad dog attacked him and bit him necessitating a trip to Ann Arbor to take the Pasteur treatment. In spite of all his hard luck he has been an energetic and active man, a hard worker and a valuable citizen. At the time of the accident he was returning from a car of coal which he was unloading under contract for the school board. The question arose as to whether he would come within the operation of the workmen’s compensation law and whether the school district would be responsible for the payment of the possible claim. However, it is not believed by the members of the school board that the law would apply in Mr. Gardner’s case as he was unloading the coal on contract and would not be an employee of the school district as an employee. Final funeral arrangements will be completed upon receipt of word from his son Frank in Chicago.
