He was born Sept. 10, 1926, in Greenville, the son of Hugh C. and Nora Cole Gardner. Ed left high school in his senior year to serve his country in the Navy during World War II. He later went back to school to graduate. During his working years, he was a laboratory technician at Extruded Metals. He was a member of the Belding Masonic Lodge F&AM #355, where he had served as worshipful master. He was also a commander of the Knights of Templar and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was a member and a deacon at First Baptist Church and of the American Legion Post 203, both of Belding. Ed was a gracious and kind man and enjoyed Halloween and decorating his house and dressing in varied costumes. During one special Halloween, his home was featured in The Daily News and over 1,100 people came to see his decorations. Ed also loved fishing and hunting. He shared his love of nature and archery, teaching many youths in the Belding area about archery. He was also a talented cartoonist and enjoyed drawing and creating cartoons. Ed was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He was married on Sept. 12, 1947, in Ionia, to Edna Welton. She survives, along with their children, Veronica and Leward Smith of Lake City, Fla., Steve and Sally Gardner of Rockford, Marcus Gardner of Greenville, and Brian Gardner and Carole Woolston of Orleans; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Ernie Dell of Nashville, Tenn., and Maxine and Harvey Poling of Belding; and an aunt, June Gardner of Belding. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Debra June Gardner; and a brother, Gordon. Funeral services for Edward are 1 p.m. Monday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with the Rev. Clifford A. Noe officiating. Interment is in River Ridge Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the service at the Belding Masonic Temple. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday with a Masonic service at 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
