William H. Gardner, son of N. P. and Nancy Gardner, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, January 11th, 1843, and died at his home in Muir, Michigan, Nov. 12th, 1921, aged 78 years and 10 months. He came to Michigan in 1856 and settled in Muir where he was married to Emma M. White January 2nd, 1868. To this union eight children were born, six of whom survive together with his widow, four grandchildren and two brothers, N. P. Gardner of Detroit, and Richard Gardner, of Pontiac. When 19 years of age Mr. Gardner enlisted in Co. I, first regiment of U. S. Sharpshooters in which organization he served two years and four months when he was discharged on account of disability. He later re-enlisted in Co. G, 10th Michigan Cavalry and served to the end of the war, serving in all four years and four months. Although the illness that proved fatal was of short duration, death was not unexpected as he had been in very poor health for the past ten years. Funeral services at the home were conducted by Rev. V. C. Webb of the Lyons Baptist church. Mr. Gardner’s death marks the passing of one more of the men who wore the Blue in defense of our country in the conflict of ’61-’65 and leaves only one veteran of the Civil war, in the village of Muir, Frank Connor, who is still hale and hearty bids fair to hold for some time the distinction of being the only veteran in Muir.
