There was a large attendance to show their esteem for this highly respected citizen who had been a resident for almost three-quarters of a century. Rev. Floyd N. Drake, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated at the services. His remains were laid to rest in the West Side cemetery at Hubbardston. Alfred W. Gardner was a descent of an old English family. His father and mother came over from England about 80 years ago. The Gardner family settled at Hubbardston about 79 years ago. His father operated a carriage and wagon shop in the early pioneer days when the horse and buggy was the only means of transportation. Fred, as he was known to all, was born at Fenton, Michigan February 20, 1859, about 1½ years before the family came to Hubbardston. He was one of fourteen children ,eleven of whom grew to maturity. When he grew old enough to use tools, he worked with his father in the carriage shop and gradually grew into the general blacksmithing business. In later years he did the blacksmith work and his father did the carriage and wagon work. On the death of his father, Fred took over the entire business. He retired from the shop six years ago. He was married December 9, 1882 to Emma E. Townsend. Three children were born to this union; Mrs. Charlotte Hayes of Beechwood, Michigan; Clark of Duluth, Minn.; and Mrs. Abbie Bahle of Sutton’s Bay, Michigan. His wife died March 25, 1901. In 1906 he was married to Mrs. Elfa King, who survives him. He is also survived by one brother, John Gardner of Cass Lake, Minn., and by two sisters, Mrs. Nettie DeLong of Hammond, Indiana, and Mrs. W. E. Mack of Niagara Falls.
