December 19, 1974 Ermal Garlinger Dies at Hastings Ermal G. Garlinger, 79, prominent business man, passed away unexpectedly Thursday evening, several hours after admittance to Pennock Hospital, Hasting. He was born at Lake Odessa, April 19 1895, the son of Benjamin G. and Millie (Nott) Garlinger and was a lifelong resident of the area. After completion of college in Grand Rapids he was employed at the Lake Odessa Produce. He married Edith Lindquist April 12, 1917 and in 1924 they purchased the business which as continued as a family operation. A member of the Congregational Church for many years, he was a life member of the Masonic F&AM Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter. He served as secretary of the Lake Odessa Board of Education from 1929 to 1939, was a member of the Ionia County Road Commission for 18 years and at one time was on the Ionia County Zoning and Airport Board. Mr. Garlinger served as Deputy Sheriff for the lake Odessa area for eight years and was a member of the volunteer fire department for many years. He was a trustee of the Odessa township Board for eight years and was Odessa Fair Association, past director of the Michigan Allied Poultry Industries, past president of the M-43 Improvement Association. A member of the Historical Society. He was very active in high school athletics and independent athletics after highs school, as well as village and civic affairs. Mr. Garlinger served on the Village Council for ten years ad as president of the Village for ten years and many improvements were made which included the erection of the water tower, first black top pavement was laid, first sewer system was built for the village and the use of electricity at the water works instead of coal. Mr. Garlinger because of his initials was also known a Mr.EGG in some feature newspaper articles. Surviving are two daughter, Laurel E. Garlinger, at home and Mrs Arthur (Marcia) Raffler, Tupper Lake, Lake Odessa; a son Fred of Lake Odessa and four grandchildren. Mrs. Garlinger passed away July 30, 1964. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, December 16 at 1:30 PM at the Pickens-Koops Funeral Chapel. Rev. Gary Evans and Rev. Gary Lyons officiated with burial in Lakeside Cemetery.
