Following a hopeless illness of more than five weeks, caused by paralysis and the infirmities of old age, Mrs. Diana Garlock expired at 2:00 o’clock Monday afternoon at the home of her son, Eugene W. Garlock, with whom she had resided since the death of her husband, 32 years ago. Although in her 86th year at the time of her death, Mrs. Garlock was in perfect health and unusually active until stricken with paralysis about the middle of February. Mrs. Garlock’s maiden name was Diana Greenfield. She was born at Little Falls, Herkimer county, N. Y., Jan. 26, 1829, having just passed her 85th birthday. In 1851 she married Levi Garlock, whose death occurred 30 years later. In 1855, when Michigan was nothing more than a wilderness, Mr. and Mrs. Garlock settled in Watertown township, Clinton county, where they remained until the death of the husband. Of four children born to this union E. W. Garlock, of Portland, is the sole survivor, the others having died in infancy. Mrs. Garlock was the last member of a family of five children. She joined the Methodist church in an early day and remained a member until her death. She was a remarkable woman for one of her years and in her death the community loses another sturdy pioneer whose hardships and reverses of the early days are beyond the conception of younger generations. Funeral services were attended from the residence of the son Wednesday afternoon at 2:00, and interment was made in Portland cemetery. Rev. W. W. Slee, of the Methodist church, officiated. Those from a distance who were here for the funeral were Miss Rena Greenfield, Hillsdale; Mr. and Mrs. Harley Garlock, Carson City; Mr. and Mrs. John Teed, Mrs. E. S. Brown and Miles Stark, Grand Ledge; Mrs. John Langhman and daughter, DeWitt; Mrs. Dora Cornish, Lansing.
